Full Text: NZNO's celebration of International Nurses' Day (IND) this year will take a regional, rather than a national approach, as it explores the theme "Closing the gap: from evidence to action" Events will be both a celebration of nurses for nurses, but will also aim at raising the public profile of nurses.

Regional events planned to celebrate the birthday of Florence Nightingale on May 12, 1820, include showcases of nursing practice with an open invitation to all nurses in the region, a quiz night or film evening, and a dinner to celebrate nursing, featuring a keynote speaker. It is hoped that media will profile nurses in their particular regions as a way of raising awareness of new models of care.

The television series Shortland Street is planning to focus on IND during one or two of its episodes screening in May. NZNO is supplying the concept designers with suitable resources for these episodes. NZNO will also produce its own IN D poster which will include photos of New Zealand nurses at work. Nurses are encouraged to submit photos for this project and should email high resolution digital images to lizr@nzno.org.nz. Photos showing nurses working with patients and demonstrating innovative practice are preferred. A consent form for patients agreeing to be photographed can be downloaded from www.nzno.org.nz/permissionforms. Photos will be kept on file at NZNO and may be used, with proper attribution, in other NZNO publicity or publications. The deadline for submitting photos for these posters is March 23.
