Full Text: As Cote d'Ivoire focuses on restoring stability and holding presidential elections, stopping violence against women and girls is an urgent priority. Women advocates claim that violence worsened during the conflict following the 2002 coup attempt that left the north under rebel control. Women's groups launched a national campaign in November 2008, including radio spots and a nationwide tour, to talk to communities and provide support to victims, although funds are needed. There are plans to set up or rehabilitate help centres for victims, train local authorities and establish legal mechanisms for combating violence. Heads of women's organisations have met with representatives of the UN and foreign embassies. The lack of a functioning judicial system and weak law enforcement are feeding impunity, and violent crime, including rape, is rampant in the former buffer zone between the north and government-controlled south. The absence of women in the peace process over the last five years has also contributed to the insecure situation of women. (1)
