Carol Ciancutti-Leyva, 2008 (DVD, 83 mins) This documentary about the controversy over breast implant safety is driven by the experience of the filmmaker's mother, who was diagnosed with breast tumours and underwent a double mastectomy followed by silicone-implant reconstruction surgery. A year later, her implants ruptured and her health steadily declined. Like many women, she believes her debilitating illnesses were linked to her implants; however, this is a major debate, which includes plastic surgeons, toxicologists, attorneys, implant manufacturers, whistleblowers, government officials and activists. This documentary introduces some individual women who talk about the choices they made about their breasts and breast implants. Even though the US Food and Drug Administration has lifted its restrictions on silicone implants anal approved them for widescale use, many serious questions, aired in this film, remain regarding their safety.
